Point of the Mountain, I’m coming!!

Taking a bit of a break from the daily grind in Florida and will be spending the next week in Draper, Utah. The to-do list is roughly as follows:

  • Paragliding refresher with certified bad-ass instructor Kevin Hintze at the Cloud-9 shop
  • Watching PD tour rep Matt get his paragliding rating
  • Have many Polygamy Porters
  • Have lots of fun flying
  • Do some work
  • Whine about it being too cold and make a trip to REI to buy warm clothes

I don’t think I’m leaving anything out, but if I did, you can let me know in the comments. I’ll make sure to upload some videos and photos from all the fun – stay tuned :)

No Solicitation, please!

The other day Faith and I were sitting at our desks at the Blue Skies Mag office, working away, when there was a knock on the door. The visitor introduced himself and told us he was there on behalf of an organization that makes it a mission to help young Florida students to pass the F-cat tests. Evidently Florida isn’t doing to hot on those tests, crikey!

I politely explained that we would sadly not be able to save the Florida youth, being a broke little startup. He then suggested a link exchange on our websites and started explaining to me how beneficial that would be for my audience. At that point, I handed him a copy of the latest magazine (Issue 24, September 2011). He opened the magazine to a photo of some dude in a Borat unitard striking a pose and then turned the page to reveal a naked gay-4-way. At that point he muttered something about the world going to hell in a handbasket and fled the scene in a hurry.

The lesson?
A copy of a Blue Skies Magazine on display is better than a No Solicitation sign.

October/November Combined = Issue #25

URGENT BREAKING WOAH NELLY NEWS!

The next issue of Blue Skies Mag to hit your mailbox will be in mid-October. No reason to be alarmed, we’re simply changing our annual combined issue from Jan/Feb to Oct/Nov.

What does it all mean?
We had combined the Jan/Feb issue to give us all a break at the holidays, but the schedule this year would have done the opposite - we’d have had a working week right in the worst part of Christmas/New Year’s. We have new ideas, so we figured now is the time to get all of it started! What are those fabulous new ideas? We’re glad you asked! They include:

* A new mission (well, our first mission since we had none before):
“Blue Skies Magazine creates conversations that contribute to the skydiving and human flight community in print, on the web, in apparel and through get-togethers.” That version is mostly for the tax man and bankers, but the short version is -

Blue Skies Mag: We’re in the business of conversation creation. Let’s talk – to the point, silly or serious, but always honest. What’s on your mind?

* Customer database – so you can update your address online and see when your subscription runs out. Right now that’s all done manually. And by manually, I mean by Kolla.

* Better integration of the magazine and online goodies

* Easier feedback and submissions. We want more letters to the editor, opinion pieces and photos!

* Issue planning – we’ll have more cohesive themes for each issue and publish those ahead of time

Most of this work is behind the scenes stuff, but you’ll see more and more new stuff coming out of the Blue Skies Mag factory in the coming months ;) Feel free to drop by and fuel the machine with beer and/or chocolate.

Your Rockin’ Memorial

If you’re not a skydiver, paraglider, BASE jumper, pilot, speed rider or aerial enthusiast of any kind, prepare for some odd-sounding morbidity. If you are one of the aforementioned freaks, we know you have a plan. A big plan. The ultimate plan, in fact: your memorial plan.

So, how do you want your friends and family to mark your passing? Do you have specific instructions on where your ash dive should be? How you want the party to go down? What music you want on the memorial DVD? A specific quote or saying for your gravestone?

Send your plans to me at lara@blueskiesmag.com, or post them here in the comments. We’ll print the best ones in our next issue.
