USPA Summer Board Meeting Minutes Highlights
The minutes of USPA’s summer board meeting are up – download here
.
First, a brief guide to reading meeting minutes: the board of directors follows the parliamentary procedures of Robert’s Rules of Order. According to Robert’s Rules, any time you want to get something done, a member brings it up as a motion. Any motion has to be seconded—that is, at least one other person on the board has to be interested in talking about or voting on whatever it is the first person wants to talk about. The person who seconds may or may not agree with the motion.
So, in USPA’s meeting minutes, each motion’s informal title is first listed in bold. A short explanation for the motion is on the second line. The third line, in bold, lists the results of voting as x/y/z where x=votes for, y=votes against and z=abstained (no vote). The person who brought the motion to vote is in parentheses. Voters can opt to have their vote specifically listed at the end of this line, but this is not required or common. The fourth line, in italics and quotations, is USPA’s official action if the vote passes.
A. Resignation of Pacific Regional Director.
Mr. Chris Quaintance submitted his resignation as the Pacific Regional Director. The following motion results:
….. Motion 10: Passed, 17/2/0 (Mr. Stokes) Farrington opposed
“Move to accept the resignation of Chris Quaintance as the Pacific Regional Director.”
So this bit means that the board accepted Chris’ resignation, after a vote of 17 for, 2 against, including Jessie Farrington against.
So, now for the highlights (Blue Skies Mag’s comments/synopses are in blue):

The New Road to Nationals
You may have heard the sad news that PACK’D, the team we were following to Nationals, is unable to go now. So, Blue Skies Mag is holding the first Get Alex VB Relay (GAVBR); instead of following a team, we’ll now follow a case of beer.
Alex is an Australian jumper now working and living at Skydive Spaceland in Houston. His birthday is coming up. He is thirsty. Alas, the one place in the entire U.S. of A. where he can find his favorite Aussie beer is a wine shop called Cellar360. In California. 1,953 miles away.
We are sending out this plea to our fellow jumpers. We know there are angels out there willing, ready and able to answer the call and quench Alex’s Aussie thirst.
The first leg of the GAVBR will need to acquire the beer from Cellar360 at Ghirardelli Square in the Woolen Mill Building and get it started on its trek southeast. Maybe you are a San Franciscan (San Franciscite? San Frannie?) headed to Elsinore for the weekend. Maybe you are driving through on your way to Eloy. Wherever you are from and wherever you are going, we will look for another volunteer at your destination to take it further east – and on, until it reaches Rosharon, Texas by October 12.
Of course, if one person can bring the VB all the way from San Francisco to Nationals, that would be ideal.
Think of it as good beer karma. If you can participate in the GAVBR, please contact us at admin@blueskiesmag.com. And let the relay begin!
Where did it go??
Melanie Curtis – the girl with the big smile and happy laugh at Skydive Elsinore (perhaps better known as Melsinore) on top of the DC-3, seemingly in search of the missing tail of the aircraft ![]()
Anyway, we thought she looked pretty damn sweet in her new suit, plus we have a soft spot for cool planes, so Mel and the DC-3 get their moment in the sun on the pages of the Blue Skies Mag blog, enjoy!
Speed Flying with Nick
If you read Scott Roberts’ article about speed flying in our September issue, you might wonder what that would feel like. Nick Kaminski is here to show you speed flying from his perspective.
What kind of skydiver are you?
Take our official Facebook quiz: What kind of skydiver are you?. Unless you hate Facebook quizzes, of course, in which case you should feel free to curse us under your breath for adding to the noise. And then take the quiz and come back to tell us your result.
Moritz Messes with Texas
German swooper Moritz Friess trekked across the Atlantic in order to train and compete at the new pond at Skydive Spaceland in Texas, the host of the 2009 USPA Nationals coming up in October.
This is a photo of him going the distance in the distance event (duh) – 480ft which qualifies as a new German national record (pending). Only Hans Paulsen of Skydive the Farm, Georgia managed to eek past Moritz going 510 ft, which is a new Texas state record (pending as well).
Moritz went on to take first place overall against some hefty competition. Pun intended, this is Texas after all. Local swooper Justin Priece came in 2nd and Hans Paulsen took third.
